چکیده

Abstract Aims Root hairs are one root trait among many which enables plants to adapt environmental conditions. How different traits coordinated and whether some mutually exclusive is currently poorly understood. Comparing a hair defective mutant with its corresponding wild-type, we explored if how the exhibited growth adaptation strategies dependent this was on substrate. Methods Zea mays ( rth3 ) wild-type siblings were grown under well-watered conditions two substrates contrasting texture hence nutrient mobility. system architecture investigated over time using repeated X-ray computed tomography. Results There no plastic of lack hairs, resulted in lower uptake nutrients especially substrate high sorption capacity. The function for anchoring did not result length density profiles between genotypes. Both maize genotypes showed marked response This well reflected spatiotemporal development rhizosphere volume fraction but highly significant diameter substrate, irrespective genotype. Conclusions most salient plasticity Coping mechanisms missing limited shift root-shoot ratio loam. Further experiments required, elucidate observed differences can be explained by mechanical properties beyond impedance, or microbiome ethylene production diffusion processes within rhizosphere.

Sloughing of root cap cells decreases the frictional resistance to maize (Zea mays L.) root growth

Root caps provide a protective layer in front of the meristem that protects the meristem from abrasion by soil particles. The continuous production and sloughing of the root cap cells may be an adaptation to decrease the friction at the soil-root interface by acting as a low-friction lining to the channel formed by the root. Experiments were performed which provide the first direct evidence tha...

Antifungal compounds from the root and root exudate of Zea mays.

A maize plant (Zea mays) planted in a test tube was found to inhibit the growth of the soil-borne plant pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melongenae. The antifungal compounds, 6-methoxybenzoxazolinone and 6,7-dimethoxybenzoxazolinone, were isolated from an ethanol extract of Zea mays roots, and (6R)-7,8-dihydro-3-oxo-alpha-ionone and (6R,9R)-7,8-dihydro-3-oxo-alpha-ionol were isolated from th...

Root hairs.

Roots hairs are cylindrical extensions of root epidermal cells that are important for acquisition of nutrients, microbe interactions, and plant anchorage. The molecular mechanisms involved in the specification, differentiation, and physiology of root hairs in Arabidopsis are reviewed here. Root hair specification in Arabidopsis is determined by position-dependent signaling and molecular feedbac...

Root cap removal increases root penetration resistance in maize (Zea mays L).

The root cap assists the passage of the root through soil by means of its slimy mucilage secretion and by the sloughing of its outer cells. The root penetration resistance of decapped primary roots of maize (Zea mays L. cv. Mephisto) was compared with that of intact roots in loose (dry bulk density 1.0 g cm-3; penetration resistance 0.06 MPa) and compact soil (1.4 g cm-3; penetration resistance...
